Writing tutors are trained to provide assistance on any academic writing assignments. During a session, students can work on the many aspects of the writing process, including topic choice, brainstorming, revision, document formats, and editing.

What can I come in for?

One-on-one sessions

In a one-on one session, individual students meet with a peer tutor for thirty minutes and work on various aspects of the writing process. One-on-one sessions are free and available by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

On-Demand Workshops

The Tutorial Center offers on-demand workshops throughout the semester on a variety of topics, including MLA, APA, grammar, and avoiding plagiarism. You can make an appointment with a tutor to review any of the workshop topics.

Group Tutoring

The consistency of regular sessions builds trust and genuine collaboration. Investing in group tutoring allows students to set goals and develop multiple strategies for improving their writing, reading, and study skills.

How does it work?

Students enroll in English 272 (Assistance in College Writing), a 0.5-1 unit credit/no credit course. Students are put into groups of 3-4 based on course level. Groups meet 2 times weekly for 50-minute sessions. Students are required to complete 24 sessions (20 hours of tutoring) to earn 0.5 unit of credit or 48 sessions (40 hours of tutoring) to earn 1 unit of credit.

Further Benefits:

On average, students who complete the 0.5 unit have a higher retention rate and earn higher grades in their classes. Students report significant improvement in generating ideas, writing in detail, organizing ideas, documenting sources, writing a focused thesis, critical thinking, and proofreading on their own for grammar and punctuation.

When should I come in?

Now! Students are encouraged to meet with a writing tutor at any point during the writing process. A peer tutor can help students brainstorm for papers, develop points fully and logically, and help the student with editing strategies in the final stages of a paper.

Do I need an appointment?

Appointments are not required but are strongly encouraged. Call us at 325-5248 to make sure a tutor is available.

What should I expect?

Peer tutors will help the writer to discover strengths and weaknesses in their paper. Students who meet with a tutor can expect a productive session in which they and the tutor engage in a conversation about writing. Writers should expect to receive feedback as they compose and think through their writing.
